Starting Puppies On Solid Food
When puppies reach the age of four weeks, they can start to eat solid food. It is best to only supply the food for the puppies and allow mama dog to tech her babies what to do, and when to do it.
Feeding your puppy a nutritious, healthy diet is very important especially since puppy is growing at a fast pace and will need the required nutrients to lay down a solid foundation for future health. Feeding a high quality dog food, or, preferably a homemade raw diet, will pay off in the long AND short run.
Allow the puppies access to fresh foods 3-4 times per day. Starting puppies on solid food should mean "nutritious healthy food". Do avoid to feed dry, or kibble, food as it is packed full of fillers and grains unsuitable for dogs, and especially puppies.
One very common suggestion found online is to mix dry food with water. This is a very dangerous practice. Kibble often contains molds from the corn and wheat that is unfortunately used to feed dogs, these molds produce life threatening toxins, called mycotoxins.
Most pet food recalls, and related deaths, are due to some form of mold toxin. Soaking the dry food in water, or other liquid, can allow the mold to produce these toxins in lethal amounts in a very short period of time.
IF dry food is ever mixed with water, which is just too risky, it needs to be eaten immediately to be safe.
Should you wean the puppies off from mother's milk?
That is an easy answer. It is a resounding "No".
